Raced by the pro riders of our TEAM LAMPRE MERIDA in 2014 for the first time, the SCULTURA now significantly ups the ante in terms of weight and aerodynamics. With a sensational frame weight of only 740 grams (in size S/M), it competes in the league for the lightest serially produced bicycles in the world. And while undoubtedly being a climbing specialist and racer at heart, the SCULTURA maintains remarkable suitability for everyday use. The aerodynamically useful relocation of the rear brake to the bottom bracket area enables the omission of the small bridge between the seat stays, which in combination with a 27.2 millimeter seat post, 25 millimeter wide tires and MERIDA’s own carbon technologies results in unparalleled levels of comfort. While by “Bio Fiber Damping Compound” special, organic flax fibers woven into the carbon structure eliminate high-frequency vibrations, the “Flex Stay” concept with flattened stays gives the otherwise super-stiff rear end with enough horizontal flex to significantly smoothen rough road surfaces.
However, the relocation of the rear brake was not the only improvement on the new SCULTURA’s aerodynamics. Additionally to the clean internal routing of all cables (of course with full Di2-compatibility), new tube profiles play the most important part. The tapered head tube was trimmed down to fit a 1 1/8” to 1 1/4” fork.
More easily recognizable are the down tube and seat tube whose new “NACA Fastback” teardrop and flattened out in the rear shapes have already helped MERIDA’s time trial specialist WARP TT to breakthrough wind channel values. Teaming up with its minimum weight, this will greatly spur a SCULTURA rider to achieve new best times on mountain stages.
In terms of power transfer, the new SCULTURA features an extra wide connection to a massive BB386-bottom bracket, by which a torsional stiffness of 60 N/mm is generated – an outstanding value for brilliant acceleration. With 92 Nm/°, head tube stiffness is more than up to par, which contributes to the SCULTURA’s assured handling especially in high-speed sections. Still, markedly short 400 millimeter chain stays perfect the bike’s overall agility.
To create one of the world’s lightest serially produced bicycles, MERIDA put huge effort into a new carbon production technology which makes it possible to use wall thicknesses of up to only 0.7 millimeters. In the end, specially trained professionals put together over 400 (!) single carbon-fiber mats over a synthetic positive core to create with each frame a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. The new SCULTURA, truly a “sculpture”, which is also finished by hand, represents MERIDA’s aim to make the best imaginable bicycles a reality.
