When the road flattens out, a cyclist’s biggest enemy is the air. Slicing through it is key and to do that effectively you need to understand aerodynamics – a field Mavic has mastered over the years by thinking about the wheel and tire as one complete system. To this end, the CXR Ultimate 60 C is the fastest clincher wheelset available today, thanks to our unique CX01 technology. The NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aerodynamics) defined the airfoil profiles that would give us the best possible aerodynamic performance and this set the basis of our CX01 technology. In this system, both the rim and the tire are perfectly integrated thanks to the CX01 Blades, which draw the perfect NACA airfoil profile. The rim is composed of an Exalith alloy rim core that delivers the best braking in the market and of a 60mm carbon flange that delivers the necessary stiffness and aerodynamics. Spokes are slender and the hubs are smooth-shaped with low friction bearings. As for the rubber, the CXR Ultimate clincher tires use different material for front and rear. The front tire is softer to improve grip especially on wet surfaces, whereas the rear tire as a harder rubber compound to maximize rolling efficiency. And most importantly, their specific tread patterns reduce the turbulence in the boundary layer (the thin layer of air that rolls on the very surface of the tire) and calms the airflow around the entire wheel profile to lower the aerodynamic drag even further.
