Hospital staff get on their bikes
Staff at Scarborough Hospital got on their bikes as part of a new "cycle to work" initiative.
The company running the scheme on behalf of the health trust – Cycle Solutions – took part in two roadshows to showcase the initiative, which could save staff up to 48 per cent off the value of purchasing a new bike and cycling equipment.
The roadshows, which took place at Scarborough and Bridlington Hospitals, were a great success with many staff signing up to the scheme.
The cycle to work scheme was set up by Carol Popplestone, a representative of the Royal College of Nursing, and Helen Long, divisional human resources manager.
Mrs Long said: "We are pleased with the feedback that we have had from the two roadshows.
"Many people have never considered cycling to work however once they try it they may find it easier, more pleasurable and safer than they initially thought.
"This scheme, which allows staff to purchase a bike and cycling equipment through a monthly salary sacrifice plan, makes purchasing a bike a more realistic and affordable option."
As well as introducing the cycle to work scheme the trust is also looking to recruit cycling champions to help promote and encourage non-cyclist staff to give it a go.
It is also looking at other areas to help encourage more people to get on their bikes which include, looking at more places to leave bikes on site where they can be left safe and secure, showering and changing facilities for staff and working with the local authorities to develop cycle friendly schemes to its hospital sites.
